Map the affected area
One damaged board or a small hardware issue is different from repeated movement across a run. Describe where the failures occur and whether previous repairs have lasted. An assessment should look at supports and connections as well as the most visible damage.
Compare useful work retained
A repair makes more sense when sound components can remain and the cause can be addressed. Replacement deserves consideration when deterioration is widespread, matching parts are unavailable or the layout no longer meets your needs. Neither choice should be made from age alone.
Compare like-for-like scope
Ask each option to state removal, replacement components, finish matching and restoration. A cheaper repair that leaves known weak supports is not directly comparable to a complete rebuild. Discuss any limits on matching weathered material.
Plan the disruption
Replacement can leave a longer temporary opening and require new approvals or utility coordination. Repair may still need access to both sides. Include pets, shared boundaries and gate access in the decision rather than treating these as afterthoughts.
